This story had aspects that worked really well. In the beginning there is a good mingling of the back story with the emotional mindset of the protagonist. In this way there is not just a lot of narrative about the events preceding the present moment of the story. The tension rises quickly. This is always a plus. Moreover tension is maintained throughout the story with the simplest of images and thoughts. This is a credit to the writer. The voice of the first person narrator is convincing even in his humorous moments. The writer does a good job with presenting just the right amount of setting. He uses some original metaphors that compliment the storyline.
There were some things that did not work so well. One is that a similar incident takes place in the lives of both the protagonist and the old man. This particular kind of coincidence is over used in fiction writing and detracted from the story a little. Two is that the protagonist is angry and upset about something.
